Dramatic rise in the No. of Medical Colleges in Malaysia has worked in the favor of medical aspirants but has also increased the competition especially in the Private sector: Ken Research

Developing Malaysia: In the last few years, healthcare facilities in Malaysia have made significant progress towards improving and transitioning from average medical facilities and manpower to producing three digit medical graduates each year. This transition has been greatly impacted by the rapid rise in the no. of medical schools. Another reason that favored Malaysian Medical Colleges is the constant rise in the non-communicable diseases; Malaysia has enough medical practitioners to tackle any crisis that our future holds.

Quality vs Quantity: Both Private and Public Sector have been engaging in increasing the influx of the foreign (international) students and greatly differ in the course fee and course structure. Multiple Private Universities in the medical education raised questions on the quality of education provided. It was suggested that the private medical education has been commercialized by the rich in the nation, however most private universities are working to inculcate the extensive training and clinical programs to raise the standard of education provided.

Bachelor’s Vs Master’s Degree: Every student has to clear basic entrance level exam along with certain 10+2 requirements to enter the medical science field and become a general physician which are available in both public and private universities. After completing Bachelor, at least 4 year experience is mandatory to independently practice as medical officer.  Medical aspirants are more attracted towards public universities while pursuing a specialized course since most specialized courses are offered only in the public universities.  From common cold to performing complex surgeries public universities have a great spectrum of medical courses giving them an advantage over private universities.

COVID Impact on Medical Colleges: Covid-19 has impacted the medical education temporarily. Many colleges faced difficulty in conducting final year exams which has affected the total toll of graduates in 2020. There has been a decline in the Intake and Enrollment number when compared to the last 5 years. Experts believe that the drop in the numbers is temporary and the system will revive completely in the future.

The report titled Landscape of Malaysia Medical Education Market-Growth in Medical Graduates, Pushing Candidates to Seek Specialization Contributing to Medical Workforce by Ken Research suggested that the Colleges have faced a downfall in terms of No. of Intake, Enrollment and Graduates amid COVID-19. However, no significant growth pattern was observed in the past 5 years for most medical courses. Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology and Ophthalmology has high conversion rate from Bachelor’s to Masters.
