Changing lifestyles of people and enhancing per capita income have aided the growth in sales of baby mobility equipment in India. Moreover entry of several international players has also propelled the market.
Indian baby mobility equipment (i.e. walker, pram/ stroller, tricycle, ride-on) industry is currently in its momentum stage. The market has been boosted by entry of several international players such as Chicco, Graco, Hauck, Jane and many others while online retail space dominated by Firstcry and Babyoye, Hopscotch and others have initiated a next wave of development. Presence of these online players in the offline space with the presence of 450+ points of sales has also supported the momentum in this market. The market is mainly import driven (especially prams/strollers and EROs) where people import the products and sell by the names of their respective brands/labels. Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Pune Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad are considered as important toy manufacturing clusters in India.
Organized players in the space tend to follow regional distributor cum direct retail distribution channel (online+ MBO/EBO) in order to maximize revenue. Within the offline retail segment, Mom and Pop stores accounted for the highest share during FY’2017. On the other hand, overall sales through EBOs are less as not many brands in the country have their own exclusive outlets. Only a few brands such as MeeMee and Chicco have their own EBOs in the country.
Baby walkers have also witnessed significant growth over the period FY’2012-FY’2017. In countries such as Canada, baby walkers have been banned, however, in India, it is an opinion of large number of parents in the country that walkers help their babies learn how to walk at a younger stage. Moreover, the average ticket size of walkers is low (INR 1,000-1,500) and can be also be afforded by financially weaker sections of the society. Furthermore, walkers are also given as gifts by a number of people in the country. Share of walkers has also inclined to 38.0% in FY’2017 in overall baby mobility equipment market.
The report titled “India Baby Mobility Equipment Market Outlook to FY’2022-Rising Online Sales of Baby Mobility Equipment and Number of MBOs to Foster Future Growth” by Ken Research suggested a robust CAGR of 13.8% in revenue of the baby mobility equipment market by FY’2022 with baby strollers/prams and walkers driving the revenues of this market in the future.
