Online pharmacy retail market is one of the most promising vertical in the Indian e-commerce space, which has been gaining attention of the government as well as investors in the last 2-3 years. Although, the e-pharmacy market has faced several criticisms from the offline pharmacy retailers as they have cited number of rules that have been flouted by the e-pharmacy companies relating to dispensing of drugs, however e-pharmacy players gained significant momentum during the Covid lockdown period as the fear of contracting the virus among consumers, pushed them to take to digital platforms, be it to pay bills or to consult doctors or to procure medicines. This phenomenon further helped the e-pharmacy segment/players to establish a strong foundation of their existence in the India healthcare sector and also helped them to define the importance of their role in the overall healthcare ecosystem in India.

As a result, Government is now working in the right direction on framing up of specific regulations for the online pharmacies which will help patients and industry to grow further in the coming years. Moreover, rising penetration of smart phones and fast-growing access to the internet in India will be one of the key growth drivers for this segment and will have to expand its reach in other regions as well.

The target demographic for online pharmacies is people who have chronic diseases, those who require medication on a monthly basis, and mostly people in the age group of 45-80. This group earlier had a lot of resistance to technology in general, be it e-commerce or online payments. However, this target segment is now well equipped with the system now and uses the platform on a regular basis, specifically in Tier1 and Tier2 cities.

After approximately 5 years into business, leading industry players such as Medlife, Netmeds, Pharmeasy and 1 Mg  have realized the importance of building portfolio of  OTC/FMCG/Health supplements to retain customers and expand wallet size, introduce services (diagnostics/tele-consultations) and generic medicine portfolio to improve their margins and to formulate a hybrid model by partnering with offline pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers, so to service consumers quickly and to expand its product portfolio on the platform.
