How is the Untreated Mosquito Nets Market Positioned in India?
Mosquito nets is a method of mosquito repellence used in India, mostly in the states with low electricity penetration, power cuts, low per capita income, high rainfall and moist climate. Untreated mosquito nets are made out of a mesh-type fabric which is fine enough to prevent mosquitoes, flies and ticks from penetrating but providing sufficient ventilation and not obscuring visibility.
Preventable diseases by use of mosquito nets include malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, zika virus and other vector-borne diseases. A mesh size of 1.2 mm prevents mosquitoes and smaller size such as 0.6 mm, stops other biting insects such as biting midges. However, mosquito net is mainly used against the malaria transmitting vector, anopheles gambiae.
To achieve malaria-free country by 2027 and elimination by 2030, National Strategic Plan (NSP) 2017-22 for Malaria Elimination has been developed by National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. Free distribution of mosquito nets has been an important measure to achieve this objective. Mosquito nets in India come under the Hometech segment of technical textiles. It is a highly fragmented market wherein it is impracticable to distinguish manufacturers from distributors because the value chain of the product is simplistic.
Sale of untreated mosquito nets is higher in tier II & III cities whereas adoption in urban areas is low due to other substitutes with better efficacy such as vaporizers, coils and rackets. Hanging mosquito nets is averse to aesthetics of urban houses and people use it mostly for infants.
