When Prathamesh first came to Goa Institute of Management (GIM) as a participant of the PGDM-Part Time course, he made the decision primarily based on the course curriculum and the flexibility it offered due to the classes being on weekends. However, within a short span of attending the course, he realised that it wasn’t going to be a cakewalk – not even by a bit. Upon realizing this, Prathamesh, the Associate Manager of Vedanta Ltd., got all the more excited. He started putting in more hours and paying extra attention to the cases forwarded in the class, the research works and the practices that the faculty would stress upon. In no time, Prathamesh found himself making the most out of the learning imparted by the course. From his peers’ varied experiences to the faculty pool’s deep insights to all things Management, there have been endless learning opportunities so far.
It often gets intriguing when a well-paid, well-positioned professional decides to leave the comforts of acushy job to embrace the rigour of academia. Prathamesh Pai Bir is one of these people. A mechanical engineer by profession, Prathamesh always thought that he could rise through the ranks by sheer hard work. “But as the years passed, I was proved wrong,” he says. “I realised that understanding the business as a whole was important if I wanted to grow.” This, plus his interest in wealth management, is what prompted Prathamesh to enter the part-time PGDMprogramme

Prathamesh stressed the fact that the diversity of students helped him gain important business insights. In addition, he says, among the many important takeaways are self-confidence, planning, analytics, leadership, teamwork, and the ability to think decisions through with a wider perspective and a business approach.“Everyone responded to solutions based on their practical experiences of their organizations,” he says. “This is what sets this programme apart from the PGP where many students are freshers.”
However, the experience comes with its share of hard work. Prathamesh explains that because the programme drives students to perform and work hard in order to achieve their goals, work-load planning is the key to success. “Yes, the programme gets taxing, but in order to achieve something you need to strive and work hard in order to achieve it,” says a satisfied Prathamesh.
Needless to say, alumni like Prathamesh are assets to institutions. When asked about the things he would like to suggest in order to make the PGDM PT experience even more enriching and interactive for participants, Prathamesh shared some deep insights: “I feel the institute can mix the PGDM-PT and PGP students for knowledge sharing or interaction. This will help in Networking and the dissemination of industry practices. Integration is required, which will also help the PGP students in gaining some practical insights of the real world.” GIM is at it!
